Eating out is a big part of going on holiday for us! Picking restaurants in the South Hams is really tricky though if you’re not familiar with the area, so we thought we would give you a few of our personal favourites. Whether it’s a seafood extravaganza or a quick tea with the kids, we’ve got you covered!
The Crab Shed
Salcombe
For those seafood lovers who appreciate locally caught fish & shellfish. Their speciality is their own 100% hand-picked local crab meat, landed by the local day boats then cooked and hand-picked on the quay. This relaxed restaurant also offers fish & chips, muscles and lobster with a rather nice accompanying wine menu. You can also purchase their crab online and it will be posted out to you cooked, packed and frozen in insulated cardboard boxes with frozen gel packs, it will defrost enroute!

The Victoria Inn
Salcombe
A relaxed pub with a good food offering. A good selection of fish and meat options with a good kids menu. They have a sizeable garden at the rear with play equipment for the children. They love dogs and make them feel very welcome too!

The Cove
Hope Cove
A relaxed bar/restaurant in the heart of Hope Cove, the balcony overlooking the beach is a particular draw on a sunny evening. Home made stone baked pizzas are delicious and their specials are always very tasty, including Vegan and vegetarian options. They do music nights, open mic and showcase nights and show major sporting events across their multi-screens over 2 floors boating the best atmosphere around. The perfect place to pop in after a day on the beach!

The Oyster Shack
Stakes Hill, Bigbury
Originating as an oyster farm 30 years ago, this bijou little restaurant prides itself in offering customers local lobster, crab and scallops cooked to perfection in the perfect seaside holiday setting. The children’s menu includes mussels in white wine & garlic served with crusty bread which we think is a great alternative to the bog standard offerings you usually encounter in restaurants. A well thought out varied wine menu is offered plus a nice selection of local gins from Dartmouth, Salcombe & Plymouth. This is a sociable little place that diners love and always received rave reviews.

This Indian restaurant is award winning for it’s high quality of food. Superb service, a vast menu and consistently good all year round. Eat in their welcoming restaurant or order take away, they deliver and charge according to distance, however if you are just out of their delivery area they have collection points in Frogmore, Stokenham, Whitestrand car park, North Sands car park and South Sands.

Restaurant Twenty Seven

This innovative young chef has hit the restaurant scene with a bang. Jamie Rogers offers his guests fine dining with his signature being unusual combinations of tastes that creates unforgettable dishes. He was the South West chef of the year in 2015 and the restaurant won the Taste of the West Best Restaurant 2018/2019. The Sunday lunches are well known for their use of local ingredients and locally farmed meat.

The hidden gem in the beautiful village of Beesands, this contemporary pub/restaurant has the winning combination of stunning location, welcoming ambience and fabulous food. Having received the accolade of Pub of the Year in the South West Tourism awards, they have built on their reputation as one of the best foodie pubs in the local area. The food is varied and the menu is plentiful, the Sunday roast fabulous and the grilled fish & meats cooked on the Josper oven are devine. This pub is a real favourite and consistently offers a high standard of food which makes for an easy choice everytime. Try their sister pub in Stokenham, The Church House Inn, a newly renovated pub/restaurant that is proving to be a hit with locals and holiday makers alike.

Wild Artichokes

Headed up by the renowned chef and food writer Jane Baxter (of River Café & regular guest on Saturday Kitchen) this cool eating establishment is hidden in the back of an industrial estate. Once you walk through the doors you are taken on a food extravaganza in a hip & trendy bench style seating arrangement. The food comes on sharing plates and there is plenty of it! Dish after dish of sublime meat, fish & vegetable concoctions that wow followed by wonderful puddings. You will be rolling out at the end of the evening, reminiscing of the fabulous food you have experienced. A great place to meet friends or dine as a large party. Booking online is essential and pre-payment is taken before your arrival.

The Seahorse
Embankment, Dartmouth
A beautiful intimate restaurant headed up the well renowned seafood restauranteur Mitch Tonks (he also owns the Rockfish chain of restaurants). This restaurant specializes in seafood and is situated on the banks of the River Dart in Dartmouth. Much of the seafood is roasted over an open charcoal fire and specialities include monkfish and scallops plus their much talked about ‘legendary’ rib of angus beef is a great alternative if meat is preferred. They also have Joe’s Bar which you can enjoy pre-dinner drinks. This is the perfect restaurant for a celebration meal and the ideal place for a cosy lunch, the set menu is good value and you still enjoy the same high quality of food and service.

A newly renovated historical pub in the heart of the pretty village of Stoke Fleming, popular with the locals. Perfectly located on the South West coast path, stop by for a warm welcome and some very reasonably priced pub grub. The Menu is varied including pies, pizzas, fish & chips and a very nice Sunday roast.

Beesands
This has always been a popular beachside shack in Beesands specialising in seafood. The newly renovated restaurant offers a more comfortable feel but still enjoys the great location and seaside feel. They offer a great selection of locally caught fish and seafood with a bring your own alcohol, it makes for a great dining experience.
