Visiting The Grain Store
I recently had the pleasure of being invited to a new and exciting wedding venue in our local area and meeting with the very lovely owner Alice Porter-Ward. I had been following them on Instagram for a while, their attractive and stylish photographs always made me stop to look and I was intrigued to find out more about this idyllic venue by the sea.I met Alice at The Grain Store on a sunny autumn morning. The rustic country farmyard that met me on arrival had me wondering what lay behind the impressive façade of the large barn that sat opposite a rather large and beautiful farmhouse.
Inside the barn
I was not prepared for the most impressive of sights when entering the newly appointed barn, with its huge high ceiling covered in silk parachutes and mega large cartwheel chandeliers not to mention the gorgeous wooden cladded walls and the trendiest toilets I have ever seen! The super gorgeous bar area fitted out in dark greys, and copper with stylish accessories, together with trestle tables in the barn which can be arranged however you want, create a relaxed yet impressive venue for a modern-day wedding. Gone are the pomp and ceremony of old, this place really knows how to offer its bride and grooms the ultimate in unique, relaxed and stylish weddings!
The location
The piece de resistance is undoubtedly the location, if you are lucky enough to get a warm sunny day then you will have the most perfect location in which to hold your celebration. The Grain Store holds a marriage licence and this includes a beautiful outdoor spot overlooking the sea in Start Bay, it couldn’t be any more perfect! Getting married by the sea is undoubtedly the most romantic of settings, however, you could also choose the garden of the farmhouse with countryside views or indeed within the barn itself.
Friendly service
Alice explained that she works closely with her bride and groom, advising them of local caterers, florists, photographers and musicians. She is committed to helping them make their day as special as possible and on the weekend of the wedding she, along with her husband Ross, is on hand for the entire duration to help out in any way needed to ensure the day (and night!) runs smoothly.The farmhouse is included, it has 7 bedrooms and has been luxuriously modernised and decorated, with sumptuous fittings and furnishings. The perfect base for the bride and family to get ready for the big day and also for the entire duration of the wedding weekend.I left The Grain Store feeling uplifted, impressed and full of admiration for Alice for the effort she has lovingly put into her business. Bride and Grooms across the land are in safe hands, Alice has you covered!

Mythra Cottage is just a 5-minute drive from The Grain Store, making it the ideal place for wedding guests to stay. It sleeps five, perfect for a family or small group, and is located in the heart of Stokenham close to the village’s amenities. This holiday cottage has warmth and character so is the perfect choice for both summer and winter escapes. It boasts an indoor fireplace for cooler nights and an open terrace for afternoon dinner and drinks in the sun.
Start Way is another holiday cottage with plenty of charm. Situated in the beautiful seaside village of Torcross, on the beach between Kingsbridge and Dartmouth, this former coastguard’s cottage has been beautifully restored to offer a contemporary open-plan living space and three bedrooms, sleeping 6. The Grain Store is just a couple of miles inland from Torcross, making Start Way the perfect for wedding guests. While staying at this property, you’ll enjoy the fresh sea air and stunning views of the coast as it is just 10 yards from the beach.
If you are after a truly luxurious stay in the South Hams, Fledgling Barn is for you. This stunning newly converted property sleeps up to six guests and has been styled beautifully with luxury features and finishing touches. The barn is located on Coleridge Farm, a quiet rural area within walking distance of Chillington village and less than a 10-minute drive from The Grain Store. It has good pubs, a farm shop and the beach all within walking distance. In the evenings, the open-plan kitchen/living area with sweeping views over rolling farmland makes a great place for the whole group to gather.
If you are wanting a true taste of the South Hams, 2 Florence Cottages makes the perfect holiday retreat. Situated close to The Grain Store in the beautiful seaside village of Torcross, this former fisherman’s cottage has been beautifully restored to offer a contemporary open-plan living space that makes the most of its delightful location. The view stretches across Slapton Ley, a beautiful nature reserve on one side and the sea to the other. The cottage sleeps 6 and includes comfortable beds and stylish décor. In the front garden, there is seating overlooking the water; the perfect spot to soak up the morning sun over breakfast and reminisce about the wonderful wedding from the night before!
