A sizzling hot summer! Ideas and things to do in the South Hams to stay cool!

As record temperatures hit the South Hams we recommend coming prepared with a few ideas to plan your magical holiday and stay as cool as possible! Read on for some things to do in the South Hams.

If you are looking for a quieter spot on the beach we suggest a few hidden away places that will enable you to enjoy the sea and relax.

Thurlestone, or Leas Foot beach, is near South Milton Beach and has easy parking either at the top or at the back of Thurlestone golf club car park. It is an easy walk down to the beautiful sandy cove with crystal clear waters.

We also recommend the best coffee in South Devon @beachbaristauk located in the dunes… Don’t forget a brownie!

Further around the corner to the right is the secret Yammer beach. There is a steep walk down from the coastal path but worth it to enjoy this secluded spot.

Check out the best things to do in the South Hams on a sizzling hot day!

On a hot day nothing could be better than being out on the water. We highly recommend booking a trip with South Hams SUP Walk Adventures. Simon and Mandy will take you to hidden waterways and sheltered coves. Their homemade sausage rolls are one of our favourites. Nothing beats family fun and messing about on the river!

More things to do in the South Hams: Catch the ferry over to East Portlemouth from Salcombe.

Mill Bay has areas of shade on the beach tucked under the trees and there is a beautiful old wood that wanders up towards Gara Rock. A great place to sit on the terrace with a cold drink over looking the breathtaking views.

Where is the best Ice-cream in The South Hams?

We recommend a trip to Salcombe Diary on Island Street in Salcombe. Established in 1979 at the bottom of Coronation Road, it still uses the same recipe with milk straight from the farm each morning and the double cream fresh from the creamery. Their ice-creams are a true taste of Devon. The Salcombe Dairy Chocolate factory is also on the same street and definitely worth a visit.

Where is the best place to eat and drink in South Devon on a hot summer’s day!

We recommend heading down to The Winking Prawn at North Sands, Salcombe. A family restaurant with parking and lots of seating, even a dressing up box for the kids! North Sands Beach is across the road so you can jump in the sea between lunch and afternoon tea!

If you are looking for a cool place to stay we recommend Bowden Wood. A luxury scandi cabin in the most incredible woodland location. Please contact us if you would like to check availability on 01548 800500.

If you are looking for more cultural things to do in the South Hams there are plenty of options! A famous landmark is Burgh Island, known for its connection to Agatha Christie. The island is full of things to explore including the remains of a former chapel. With beautiful views across the coastline, a whole day could be spent enjoying Burgh Island. The Pilchard Inn is a great place for a refreshing drink to cool yourself down and have a bite to eat.

There are also several castles to visit. A nice break in the shade whilst taking in some great architecture. Dartmouth Castle, Totnes Castle and Berry Pomeroy Castle are some popular favourites. You will also be able to learn about the eventful history.

Another great way of sightseeing whilst staying in the shade is taking a trip on a steam train. South Devon Railway offers journeys taking you through the countryside and along the River Dart. And Dartmouth Steam Railway goes along the coastline, so options for beautiful views are not short!

No matter your ideal Summer activities, you can find things to do in the South Hams. During your stay in our luxury holiday cottages, we are happy to give any recommendations.
