Join us on a culinary tour of Kingsbridge! You never know, it may inspire you to embark on your own gastronomic adventure in the delightful South Hams town. Whether you’re craving freshly caught seafood or traditional pub fare, these Kingsbridge restaurants and cafes offer a treasure trove of foodie delights.
1. Wild Artichokes
Wild Artichokes is a quirky restaurant, tucked behind the back of an industrial estate in Kingsbridge. You would never know it was there unless you were told about it!
This hidden establishment is run by a celebrity chef and local to the town, Jane Baxter. You’ll see her on the BBC’s Saturday Kitchen regularly and she has a rich history of cooking around the country. Her passion is Italy and you’ll often find her in Puglia finding inspiration for her incredible dishes that are served in Wild Artichokes.
Wild Artichoke’s carefully crafted menu features seasonal produce and locally sourced ingredients. Made for sharing, this is the perfect place for both couples and families to come together and dine. Their feasting nights (that are often themed) and other culinary events book up quickly in the summer months, so be sure to get in there early!
2. Twenty Seven
Twenty Seven is a Michelin star restaurant pioneered by local lad Jamie Rogers. The story behind Twenty Seven is inspiring. Jamie first joined a professional kitchen as an apprentice and since then worked his way up before setting up his own restaurant at the age of 27 (hence the name!).
Twenty Seven is now winning awards left right & centre, including a Gold Food Drink Devon award in 2022. The food is impressive and beautifully presented. This Kingsbridge restaurant has a loyal foodie following that are excited to see it continue to grow and gain national exposure.
The restaurant has a Lunch, Early Dinner, A La Carte, and 6-Course Tasting Menu (for those really special occasions). As with Wild Artichokes, we recommend booking early.
3. Maha Bharat
Maha Bharat offers authentic Bengali and Indian cuisine. Established in 1993, this is a firm favourite in the town. With friendly service and a variety of comforting food to choose from Tandoori to Balti and Fusion dishes, there is nothing not to love about this Kingsbridge restaurant!
The restaurant and takeaway service are very popular with holidaymakers and locals alike. They deliver within a 7-mile radius of the town, so wherever you may be staying in Kingsbridge, you will be able to try a selection of their award-winning food.
4. Harbour House Cafe
Harbour House Cafe is a vegetarian cafe offering a selection of home cooked delights. Part of the Harbour House Centre for Arts and Yoga, this cafe has both indoor and outdoor seating available. The outdoor courtyard space is shady and covered, making it the perfect place to relax in the summer months.
The cafe is open on weekdays between 10am – 3pm, making it a great option for midweek lunches. Since it is in the heart of the town, it is the perfect place to stop for an iced coffee and a slice of homemade cake.
5. The Tower Inn
The Tower Inn in the village of Slapton (just a 15-minute drive from Kingsbridge) lost their indoor kitchen to a fire a couple of years ago and unfortunately, they haven’t been in a position to rebuild it. However, this hasn’t stopped them serving up delicious food! Their fabulous long standing French chef Dom has made an outdoor kitchen with a wood fired oven from which he serves homemade pizza, fish specialities, steaks, BBQs, and even a Sunday roast!
If you are heading to Kingsbridge to celebrate a special occasion, The Tower Inn also offers a set party menu starting from £30 per person. Its tucked away courtyard garden makes the perfect setting for a relaxed get together.
6. The Cricket Inn
The Cricket Inn can be found in the quaint village of Beesands, between Kingsbridge and Dartmouth. The restaurant offers exceptional fish, often grilled on their Josper oven.
Potentially the best bit about this restaurant is its wonderful sea view. It overlooks the vast but beautiful Start Bay. Whatever time of year you visit, we recommend a beach walk followed by an indulgent seafood feast. Most of the seafood they serve is caught daily by the fishermen on their doorstep. Can it get any fresher than that?!
7. Valley View Cafe
Valley View Cafe is the hot ticket for cooked breakfast. All meat comes from their onsite butcher at Aune Valley and is really delicious. Fruit and vegetables are also grown on the farm. They serve light lunches and afternoon tea too.
The cafe is extremely popular at weekends and as you can’t book it’s a case of getting there early! In the summer months, grab a seat on the terrace and take in the beauty of the South Hams countryside. If you are staying nearby in Kingsbridge, you can order some of their famous BBQ packs to enjoy al fresco in the comfort of your own holiday home.
8. The Crabshell Inn
The Crabshell Inn has recently been taken over by St Austell brewery. Food is courtesy of chef Gareth Head who has been at the restaurant for a few years. The pizzas are a must-try when you visit. They are especially delicious when basking in the sun with a cold pint and a riverside view!
With plenty of outdoor waterside seating and a balcony, this Kingsbridge restaurant gets busy in the summer months and has a wonderful, lively atmosphere. The Inn also usually has music nights throughout the summer. It’s the ‘in place’ to go for the under 25’s (and those young at heart!) but really appeals to all age groups.
9. The Old Warehouse
The Old Warehouse has seasonal menus featuring locally sourced ingredients. It’s a cool establishment with a relaxed atmosphere and serves brunch and lunch as well as dinner. If you are wanting something sweet, why not visit their cafe for a coffee and a slice of homemade cake?
This Kingsbridge restaurant is especially unique as it produces its own award-winning sparkling mead which is brewed on the premises. This is served in their taproom, along with other delicious locally-brewed beers and cider on tap!
10. The Old Bakery
You can find The Old Bakery nestled in the heart of Kingsbridge on the Promenade. The building is full of character, dating back to the late 19th century, adding to the charm and appeal of the restaurant. Indulge in a delightful array of modern Mediterranean and Middle Eastern cuisine, designed to be shared.
The menu caters to a variety of dietary preferences, with numerous vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free options available. The friendly team sources fresh produce directly from growers in the South Hams. In 2021, they received a Travelers’ Choice award from Trip Advisor.
